This is the 2nd house of any birth chart. This is where you see how much wealth can you accumulate, how will your family be. How would the thought process of your Mother-in-law be?
This house represents your Family, Family lineage, Family wealth, Early childhood, accumulated wealth, bank balance, inner value system, family upbringing, family values, Character of person, speech, tongue, teeth, cheeks, eyes, goodness, food you like, wisdom.
Benefic planets placed well in the 2nd house give good results for the above significations. While Malefic planets place not so well in the 2nd house will create problems is the fructification of the above significations.
This house also plays a very prominent role in detecting liars.
Relatives it signifies are – Immediate Family, mind of mother-in-law.
One of the biggest significations of this house is the accumulated wealth. When we say accumulated wealth in today’s world, we mean, anything which we can earn and keep. So, Fortunes, profits, gains, power, resources, security, material achievements, jewellery, shares, stocks, bonds, precious stones, all come under the significations of this house.
The body parts signified by this house are Eyes, Tongue, Nose, Teeth, Chin.
Interestingly, this house is also called as a MARAKA STHANA, (Death inflicting house). This is interesting because the mere translation of the connotation generally gets people thinking that this house causes death. However, that’s not the case. You have to understand it like this. When these texts were written, they were written by maharishis, who were detached from worldly matters. For them spirituality was the epitome of success. If you look at the significations of the 2nd house, they are very material, and these significations themselves become burned at a point in one’s life if they are not working properly. This then given the individual the feeling of death infliction and burden, which takes a toll on health and mind and reduces happiness and spiritual upliftment. Too much of these significations also lead people away from the spiritual path. Thus, this is a MARAKA Sthana.
Placements of different planets and lords of different houses in the 2nd house play a very crucial role to judge the entire well being of the house. Example: If Moon is present in the 2nd house, there is a huge probability that the person will be well spoken and liked by many. In the same place, if Mars in the 2nd house, the native would have high probabilities of a difficult childhood, with a harsh or very direct speech.
Again, these are examples only. The chart needs to be looked at holistically to gauge the totality of the individual.
Below are the basic and general permutation and combinations, as given in the texts, if the 2nd lord is placed in the 12 different houses. This is at a very basic and mundane level. The actual impact can be judged when we combine the Lord placement with the sign and planet placements. But from a basic comprehension aspect, this will be helpful to understand as we go along. So, this is not to be taken literally as full diagnosis is required. You also have to understand, that these texts were written when our society and culture had much different values and norms. You have to be intelligent enough to interpret these according to today’s time place and condition. These are just excerpts. We shall cover this in details a different series on “Lords in the Houses”.
2nd Lord in the 1st house: native will be endowed with sons and wealth, be inimical to his family, lustful, hard-hearted and will do others’ jobs.
2nd Lord in the 2nd house: native will be wealthy, proud, will have two, or more wives and be bereft of progeny.
2nd Lord in the 3rd house: native will be valorous, wise, virtuous, lustful and miserly; all these, when related to a benefic. If related to a malefic, the native will be a heterodox (not conforming with accepted or orthodox standards or beliefs).
